Free sample lesson: how dogs learn

Try a short lesson in the style of our courses. It takes about five minutes.

1. Behaviour that is rewarded is repeated

Dogs repeat what works for them. If sitting calmly gets attention, treats or a game, sitting becomes more likely next time. This is the foundation of force-free training.

2. Timing matters

Reward within a second or two of the behaviour you want. A dog connects the reward to whatever he was doing at that moment, so mark the instant he sits, not the moment he stands up again.

3. Make it easy first

Practise in a quiet room before you try in the garden or on a walk. Add distractions slowly, only when your dog is getting it right most of the time.

Try it now

  1. Hold a small treat and wait for your dog to sit on his own.
  2. The moment his bottom touches the floor, say “yes” and give the treat.
  3. Repeat five times, then take a break.
